First, BJD requires a certain level of financial resources. The dolls themselves are expensive, and the subsequent makeup and clothing are truly unaffordable. It requires extreme frugality (like buying a Lamborghini and having to maintain it regularly).
Second, you need a certain level of patience (I have a very low patience). I've been playing with dolls for four and a half years, and half of that time was spent waiting for the production and makeup application. It's incredibly painful. Even if you buy the dolls outright, you'll still be dissatisfied and even get tired of them after a while.
Finally, BJD is a complete torture, both mentally and physically. Problems like makeup fading and yellowing are constant, and you spend a lot of time and money on BJD. You even have to endure the strange looks of others outside the industry.
